In the Bay of Somme, gray seals are born and grow up in safe custody. By the time they are weaned and the loss of their white coat, seal pups must grow, gain independence and above all gain weight. The goal is to gain 20 pounds in three weeks. During this period, the small seals are particularly vulnerable. Since the beginning of 2021, already two baby seals have been found dead. In recent years, volunteers from the Picardie Nature association have spotted 11 whitecoats who have reached adulthood.
Some whitecoats are born on beaches frequented by walkers: the teams of volunteers take turns to ensure the peace of the mother and her young. “This is completely normal! We must try to preserve what we have left, I think we have already done enough damage like that”, Assures a walker.
