Herons and moorhens, but above all small plots, rare and difficult to observe: in an old quarry a few kilometers from Poitiers (Vienne), these birds find the calm they need. The nature reserve has been managed by Johan Tillet for 12 years. According to him, these spaces are essential to save species. “We have a loss of habitats, growing urbanization, so the natural spaces where these species find favorable conditions are shrinking”, he regrets.
This haven of peace is very localized because at the scale of the territory, the nesting birds lack space, even in the Poitou countryside, with large cultivated plots. The department of Vienne almost saw one of its emblematic birds, which nests on the ground, disappear. However, arrangements are possible, such as simple hedges between several plots: a refuge for these birds. 32% of endangered species in France are nesting birds.
