Dance in a tutu at -12 ° C to challenge Vladimir Poutine. This Saint Petersburg ballet dancer performs a “Swan Lake” dance in the middle of this frozen bay to defend a cause close to her heart. By posting these videos, she relayed a petition calling on Vladimir Putin to stop a controversial project. It would impact the bay of Batareinaya, in the west of Russia.
Since 2020, the Russian government has rented this area to a grain company so that it can build a port terminal there. This project, which is scheduled to end in 2024, has sparked a wave of opposition. “It is a unique natural site: the curve of the Gulf coast protects it against the wind whatever the weather. It is very pleasant to walk there, the landscapes are magnificent: there are oaks, junipers three meters high“, recounts Ilmira Bagautdinova.
In addition to being an area popular with locals, this bay is part of a former nature reserve. It is home to animals such as the gray seal and ringed seal or migratory birds, some of which are threatened. In their petition, the opponents demand the cancellation of the project and the reinstatement of the bay in the nature reserve.
