Mayonnaise to save turtles affected by an oil spill. This is one of the consequences of the oil spill which has hit the Lebanese and Israeli coasts since mid-February 2021. Indeed, the tar can poison turtles and block their digestive tract. Thus, in this Israeli center, surviving turtles are treated with a special treatment: mayonnaise. This is because mayonnaise breaks down the tar and loosens it from the wall of the intestine.
This technique had already been used in Florida in 2010 in response to the oil spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon platform. After the arrival of the turtles, this treatment is administered to them for several days. The caregivers also had to remove the tar that covered their bodies. Since mid-February, at least 22 turtles have been found on beaches across the country and most have died of their injuries. Hundreds more may have been affected.
More than 1,000 tons of tar were dumped on the Israeli coast, and the Lebanese coast was also affected. According to the Israeli Minister of Environmental Protection, the person responsible is the tanker of a Lebanese company, which linked Iran to Syria. Some of the turtles collected here have finished their treatment and could be fed again with fish or salad. They still have to be monitored for several weeks.
