There are only 250 on the whole planet, and they are all in a very small area of New Caledonia. Threatened by human activity, this palm is critically endangered …
Do you know the Burretiokentia koghiensis? No ? It’s normal. There are around 250 palm trees like this all over the planet and all of them are concentrated in this forest, in a small area of four square kilometers. It is a micro-endemic species classified as critically endangered. Today, this palm tree is particularly threatened by the clearing and the presence of a tourist activity zone nearby.
The Endemia association added it to the “Red List of Threatened Flora”, an international reference inventory. In New Caledonia, nearly 8 out of 10 plants are endemic and only exist on this archipelago and nearly one in 10 is micro-endemic.
