A French, native from Montpellier (Hérault), has decided to leave everything behind to fulfill his dream: to live with the elephants of Thailand, the sacred animal of the kingdom of Siam. François Collier has lived in the country for 17 years. Owner of six elephants, this ancient magician cannot understand the love he has for these pachyderms. “Why an elephant rather than a dog? I already had the dog anyway. I do not know“, says François Collier, who claims to have fallen in love with these elephants.
The French buy back elephants that have long been used in the tourist industry; animals today incapable of reintegrating the wild life. The elephant, the country’s heritage, has always been domesticated. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, François Collier welcomed French autistic people for elephant therapy courses. The animal is indeed very playful, and very quickly develops bonds of affection which can allay certain anxieties. In Thailand, shelters welcome and care for elephants after a hard life devoted to mass tourism.
