The lynx is one of the jewels of the wildlife of Franche-Comté. But this beautiful animal is in danger. In the spring, it moves more and collisions on the road multiply.
With its coat hemmed in black and its pointed ears, the lynx is an animal as beautiful as it is majestic. In Franche-Comté, it is one of the treasures of wildlife. However, spring harbors many dangers for him. Indeed, the animal moves more and is sometimes run over by cars. Rescuers from the Athénas center collect the wounded to take them to the veterinarian. Sometimes they have to be euthanized, when the spine is affected.
Of the 120 lynxes that live in the Jura massif, five have already been killed on the roads in two weeks. A dramatic situation. During the rutting season, the lynx seek to meet and multiply their movements. “This is what makes them particularly vulnerable to road traffic”, explains Giles Moyne, director of the Athénas center. This excess mortality could be avoided, if signs were installed for example. This is what the center wants. A national action plan for the lynx is currently in preparation.
