Thefts of beehives are occurring more and more frequently and this phenomenon worries beekeepers. Some invest very large sums in anti-theft systems.
On February 17, in Gometz-la-Ville (Essonne), a thief wanted to steal the beehives of Julien Perrinbeekeeper. But a camera he had installed records the scene. On his phone, he receives live snapshots of the thief in action. The gendarmerie came to pick up the individual, caught in the act. This equipment was installed to protect its gold bees: they are males selected for a century for their resistance to a devastating parasite.
In Isère, in Tour-du-Pin, a beekeeper is convinced that another honey producer stole 15 of his 150 beehives a year ago. According to him, thefts are increasing in the face of the excess mortality of bees. To prevent this incident from happening again, he installed GPS sensors in his hives, tracked in real time on his phone. The manufacturers of these small devices are drowning in demand.
