Do you have a garden? Why not install a nesting box there: the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) encourages individuals to create bird sanctuaries to save birds threatened with extinction.
In his pavilion in the Parisian suburbs, in the Val-d’Oise, a retired teacher has made his garden a refuge for birds. He makes nesting boxes in the hope that one day the chickadees will make their nests there. “More and more, the architectures are smooth. There are no longer any old trees with cavities so the possibilities of nesting birds are increasingly reduced. This is why we are helping them artificially”, explains François Gross.
Simple birdhouses can make a big difference for some endangered species, provided they’re the right size and placed in the right place. François Gross also created a pond in his garden, which has become a bathing place for a few birds. “It’s a real pleasure to see that we are contributing on a small scale to promoting biodiversity, which is very poorly developed at the moment”, he believes.
